Emirates International School–Jumeirah, Profile
Emirates International School-Jumeirah was founded in 1991 and has grown to accommodate over 2000 students of approximately 100 nationalities from EY1 to Year 13. The school is rated as 'Very Good' by the KHDA and is demonstrative of the highest international standards in both curriculum and instruction. The school has been known in the region for over three decades for its educational excellence. Emirates International School-Jumeirah has shared a rich association of over 30 years with the IB and was the first school in the UAE to offer the IB Diploma Programme. The school is proud of its status as an IB World School and is one of the few schools in the world and the UAE to be authorized to provide all four IB programmes; the Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP) and the IB Career-related Programme (IBCP).
The IB Diploma Programme (IB DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising of Theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay (EE). Each student takes at least three (but not more than four) subjects at the higher level (HL), and the remaining at the standard level (SL). SL subjects have a minimum requirement of 150 contact hours and HL subjects of 240 hours. HL and SL courses differ in scope, with students expected to demonstrate a greater body of knowledge, understanding, and skills in higher-level subjects. Students choose courses from the following subject groups: studies in language and literature; language acquisition; individuals and societies; sciences; mathematics; and the arts. Students may opt to study an additional subject from sciences, individuals and societies, or languages, instead of a course in the arts. Students have the option of pursuing a bilingual diploma where they can study their mother tongue language as one of the DP subjects.
Both SL and HL subjects at the IB DP are scored on a scale of 1- 7 points, resulting in a 42-point system. There are a further 3 bonus points available for the core components of the extended essay and theory of knowledge taking it up to a total of 45 points. It is the school’s policy to not predict bonus points for TOK and the Extended Essay. The predicted scores for Year 13 students are reported out of 42 points. The school does not report GPA or subject credits and does not rank students.
The IB Career-related Programme (IB CP), established at the school in 2014, comprises of three IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses, a core consisting of four components and a career-related study. Students study three DP subjects- English, Mathematics and Language acquisition and pursue Pearson BTEC level 3 in Business for career-related study. The IBCP core includes a Reflective Project, Service Learning, Personal and Professional Skills and Language Development.
